South Korea’s consumer price index rose 3.1% year-over-year in August 2026, rebounding from 2.8% in July amid elevated oil prices and a low-base effect from prior mobile-service discounts that boosted public-service prices by 6.5%. Core inflation, excluding food and energy, accelerated to 3.4%, its highest since mid-2023, while the Bank of Korea has delivered back-to-back rate hikes to 3.0% and revised its 2026 GDP forecast upward to 3.3%. Institutional projections from the BOK and KDI center on 2.7% annual inflation for the year, reflecting persistent demand pressures and commodity costs offset by expected base-effect moderation in coming months. The next CPI release on October 1 will clarify whether headline readings sustain above 3% or align with the 2.4–2.9% range favored by trader consensus.
