Municipal elections are currently scheduled to be held in South Africa on November 4, 2026. eThekwini’s mayor will be elected by the newly constituted council at its inaugural meeting, which is expected to be held within 14 days of the municipal election, by November 18, 2026. This market will resolve to the first individual who officially assumes the role of Mayor of eThekwini following the 2026 South African municipal elections. A qualifying individual must be elected mayor by the eThekwini Municipal Council. Temporary, interim, or placeholder mayors appointed before the election will not be considered. If the result of this election isn't known by June 30, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, the market will resolve to "Other". The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the government of South Africa, including the Electoral Commission of South Africa (https://elections.org.za); however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.**Recent candidate announcements by major parties ahead of South Africa’s November 4 local government elections have kept probabilities for the next eThekwini mayor closely contested on prediction markets.** MK Party support leads recent polls at around 55% in one survey (Ipsos) but lower in others, positioning its candidate Zandile Hlophe-Mkhwanazi as a frontrunner if the party secures an outright majority or favorable coalition. The IFP’s late-August naming of Deputy Transport Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa, paired with a deputy mayoral pick, and the DA’s selection of Haniff Hoosen have boosted those contenders’ visibility. The ANC’s shortlist—including incumbent Cyril Xaba, Nomusa Dube-Ncube, and Thabani Nyawose—remains un-finalized, adding uncertainty. Service-delivery concerns such as water infrastructure and the metro’s R70-billion budget, combined with potential post-election coalition negotiations if no party wins a clear majority, sustain trader caution and prevent any single outcome from pulling decisively ahead.
