Recent August CPI data showed a 0.4% month-over-month headline gain and 3.4% year-over-year rate, with core rising 0.3% month-over-month, aligning with forecasts amid elevated gasoline prices that contributed over one-third of the monthly increase due to ongoing Middle East supply disruptions. Trader sentiment for September's monthly reading reflects these energy pressures alongside rising one-year inflation expectations, which climbed to 4.6% in the University of Michigan survey, while sticky components such as shelter and services remain firm. The closely matched probabilities around 0.4% and 0.5% month-over-month highlight uncertainty over the extent of energy pass-through versus potential moderation in other categories ahead of the October 14 release and the September FOMC meeting. Market-implied odds aggregate real-capital assessments of these crosscurrents in monetary policy and inflation trajectories.
