Recent August CPI data holding steady at 3.4% year-over-year, with a 0.4% monthly gain driven largely by gasoline prices rising 3.9%, has anchored trader expectations for September around 3.5%. Elevated energy costs from ongoing geopolitical tensions, combined with persistent services and shelter components, support the tight clustering between 3.4% and 3.6% outcomes that together exceed 75% implied probability. Core readings at 2.4% and upward revisions to consumer inflation expectations to 4.6% add uncertainty, as does the potential for methodological shifts or easing in goods prices. The upcoming October 14 release and September FOMC meeting remain key near-term catalysts influencing these market-implied odds.
