Recent July CPI data at 3.4% year-over-year, down from 3.5% in June, anchors trader expectations for August as the September 11 release approaches, with consensus forecasts holding the annual rate near 3.4%. Market-implied odds concentrate on 3.3–3.5%, reflecting anticipated stability amid a modest monthly rebound driven by energy prices and shelter costs, while core CPI trends softer toward 2.3–2.5% as goods prices ease and services inflation remains contained. Key swing factors include gasoline rebounds and tariff-sensitive categories, against a backdrop of persistent but moderating underlying pressures above the Fed’s 2% target.
