Recent energy price volatility tied to Middle East developments has kept Canada's headline CPI near 3% through July 2026, with the latest reading at 3.0% year-over-year, while core measures remain anchored around 2%. The Bank of Canada's July Monetary Policy Report projects inflation easing toward 2.5% over the second half of the year, contingent on declining oil prices and narrower gasoline margins, before returning to the 2% target in early 2027. Soft labor market conditions and excess economic capacity continue to limit underlying pressures. With the August CPI release due shortly and ongoing geopolitical risks, market-implied odds favor the 2.5–2.9% annual range at 38.3% over the closely contested 3.0–3.4% band at 31.8%, reflecting trader consensus on the central bank's baseline path amid elevated uncertainty.
