Recent CPI data showing India's headline inflation rising to 4.82% in August 2026—driven by food prices at 5.95%, elevated energy costs from West Asia tensions, and adverse base effects—underpins the 90.5% market-implied odds for December 2026 year-on-year CPI above 4.50%. Persistent supply-side pressures from El Niño conditions, incomplete crude pass-through, and broadening price gains have kept readings above the RBI's 4% midpoint for multiple months, aligning with the central bank's FY27 projection near 5% and expectations of further upside into late 2026. Traders price in limited scope for rapid reversal absent a swift geopolitical de-escalation or stronger monsoon relief, though contained core inflation near 4.3% leaves some room for moderation if input costs stabilize.
