Maine’s 2nd District race remains competitive after Democratic Rep. Jared Golden opted not to seek reelection, opening a Republican-leaning seat that backed Trump by nine points in 2024. Trader consensus gives former Gov. Paul LePage a modest edge over state Auditor Matthew Dunlap, reflecting the district’s conservative tilt, LePage’s name recognition from prior statewide runs, and his stronger fundraising position. Dunlap secured the Democratic nomination in June via ranked-choice voting after a crowded primary that national Democrats had hoped would produce a more moderate nominee. Recent polling shows mixed results, with some surveys indicating a single-digit LePage lead and others nearly tied. Key factors that could widen the gap include further national political shifts, additional campaign spending by outside groups, or voter turnout patterns in this rural district.
