The preliminary University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment index for September 2026 printed at 47.8 on September 11, down 3.9 points from August and well below consensus forecasts near 51, driving the 73.5% market-implied probability on the 46.0–48.9 range. The decline reflected broad-based drops in both current conditions and expectations components amid a resurgence in fuel prices, elevated trade tensions, and a jump in one-year inflation expectations to 4.6%, the highest since June. Lingering effects from the earlier Iran conflict and reduced household purchasing power continue to weigh on sentiment, consistent with Goldman Sachs commentary linking weaker readings to broader declines in reported happiness and institutional trust. With the final release due September 25, traders are pricing limited scope for meaningful revision outside the current band given historical patterns around preliminary prints.
