Recent August CPI data showing a 0.4% monthly rise, driven by a 27%+ year-over-year surge in gasoline prices amid Iran-related supply disruptions and elevated diesel costs, anchors trader expectations for September. Persistent energy pressures, coupled with rising consumer inflation forecasts to 4.6% over the next year and firm core readings near 0.3%, support the closely matched 33% and 27.5% market-implied odds on 0.4% versus 0.5% outcomes. Broader factors including trade tensions, shelter trends, and the upcoming FOMC meeting add uncertainty, as any moderation in fuel prices or softening in services could shift the distribution toward lower prints.
