Recent surges in gasoline prices and renewed trade tensions tied to the Iran conflict have weighed on household finances, driving the University of Michigan's preliminary September 2026 consumer sentiment index to 47.8—down 7.5 points from August and marking the second-lowest reading on record. Year-ahead inflation expectations jumped to 4.6%, the highest since June, while both current conditions and expectations components declined amid broad affordability concerns. These developments align with the market-implied odds concentrating on the 46.0–48.9 range as the consensus outcome for the final release. Traders are monitoring any further energy price volatility or labor market data ahead of the September 25 final print, which could influence revisions within the narrow band.
