Recent August CPI data printed at 3.4% year-over-year with core rising 0.3% month-over-month—hotter than the 0.2% consensus—while the Cleveland Fed nowcast for September stands at 3.43%. Elevated gasoline and energy prices amid geopolitical supply pressures, alongside firmer services costs, support the tight clustering of market-implied odds around 3.5% and 3.6%. These outcomes reflect trader assessments of sticky shelter components and potential second-round effects, tempered by possible moderation in goods deflation. Upcoming September CPI release and FOMC communications will provide key signals for whether inflation reaccelerates or stabilizes near current levels.
