Recent August ISM Manufacturing PMI data at 54.6, down from July’s 55.6 but still marking the eighth straight month of expansion, has anchored trader expectations for the September reading in the low-to-mid 50s. Softer new orders (53.7) and backlogs (51.8) signal moderating demand momentum after July’s surge, while elevated prices paid (71.1) reflect persistent cost pressures from tariffs, Middle East supply disruptions, and AI-driven commodity demand. Offsetting factors include robust production (58.3), growing employment, and customer inventories remaining “too low,” which historically supports future replenishment. With the September release due October 1, markets price in continued expansion near recent levels amid uncertainty over whether geopolitical and tariff headwinds will further cool orders or if low inventories and output strength can sustain the mid-50s range.
