Recent military tensions and US sanctions have driven sharp depreciation of the Iranian rial on the open market, with the USD rate reaching record levels near 2.35 million IRR by September 9 amid attacks on oil tankers and disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz. Reduced oil export revenues and restricted access to foreign currency reserves have intensified selling pressure, outpacing Central Bank interventions and contributing to the gap versus official rates around 1.37 million IRR. With the currency already trading well above 2.2 million IRR and roughly three weeks remaining until month-end, trader consensus assigns the highest implied probability to an end-September close in the 2.2M+ range. Ongoing geopolitical and sanctions dynamics remain the dominant influences on near-term exchange rate movements.
