Multiple companies are advancing orbital data centers to address surging AI inference demand and terrestrial power constraints, with Starcloud’s November 2025 H100 GPU flight demonstrating in-orbit large language model training and Google Gemini inference as key proof points. SpaceX filed for up to one million AI1 satellites, Orbital partnered with Reflex Aerospace for 2027 prototype launches targeting 250 kW per spacecraft, and Blue Origin and Google’s Project Suncatcher pursue similar constellations. Market-implied odds reflect skepticism about scaling beyond small demos before 2027 due to launch costs, radiative cooling, and data transmission limits, though Starship milestones and FCC approvals could accelerate timelines. NVIDIA’s Space-1 Vera Rubin Module and radiation-tolerant hardware further support near-term progress toward qualifying orbital compute nodes.

“Orbital data center” refers to any spacecraft, satellite, or equivalent technology carrying computing infrastructure that is launched into Earth’s orbit for the purpose of providing data-center, cloud-computing, or artificial intelligence computing services and which includes at least 100 data-center-grade AI accelerators, GPUs, TPUs, or substantially equivalent compute processors, (e.g. NVIDIA H100 GPUs, Google TPUs, or equivalent or successor chips).
“Successfully launched” refers to any launch which successfully places a qualifying orbital data center into Earth’s orbit.
The primary resolution source for this market will be a consensus of credible reporting.
