OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s September 2026 statements prioritizing AI safety and alignment work over a public listing have solidified trader consensus around the 95.5% market-implied odds against a $1 trillion-plus IPO before 2027. The company confidentially filed in June but shifted from late-2026 ambitions after rejecting lower valuations, citing heavy operating losses, $600 billion in compute commitments, and caution from the SpaceX IPO experience. Altman explicitly ruled out 2026, noting no pressure to list amid calls for industry coordination on frontier model risks. While a sudden regulatory green light or major capability demonstration could theoretically reopen the window, the combination of explicit leadership guidance and ongoing infrastructure demands makes a near-term trillion-dollar debut highly improbable under current conditions.
