The preliminary University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment index for September 2026 printed at 47.8 on September 11, landing squarely in the 46.0–48.9 range that commands 74% market-implied probability. The 3.9-point decline from August’s final 51.7 reading stemmed primarily from a resurgence in fuel prices and ongoing trade tensions, which pushed one-year inflation expectations up to 4.6%—the highest since June—while eroding both current-conditions and expectations sub-indices. Traders are weighting the final September print, due September 25, heavily toward this bin given historical revision patterns and the breadth of the preliminary drop. Broader labor-market resilience and equity levels have provided limited offset, leaving short-term inflation concerns as the dominant driver of current odds.
