The August 2026 CPI report, released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, confirmed the annual inflation rate at 3.4%, unchanged from July and aligning closely with consensus forecasts. This outcome reflects offsetting pressures: energy prices surged 16.3% year-over-year, fueled by a 3.9% monthly jump in gasoline, while shelter inflation eased to 3.0% and food costs moderated to 2.7%. Core CPI, excluding food and energy, rose 2.4% annually, down from 2.5% the prior month. Market-implied odds reflect this verified release, with traders assigning near-certainty to the 3.4% print given the official data. Potential challenges include any late revisions to the unadjusted figures or shifts in how markets interpret the monthly 0.4% headline increase ahead of the next FOMC meeting.
