Recent August CPI data, showing a 0.4% monthly gain and 3.4% year-over-year rate with core at 0.3% and 2.4%, anchors trader expectations for September amid elevated gasoline prices and energy volatility tied to Middle East supply disruptions. Rising consumer inflation expectations to 4.6% and Cleveland Fed nowcasts near 3.43% year-over-year reflect these pressures, balanced against softening shelter components and mixed goods inflation. The narrow spread between 0.4% and 0.5% outcomes highlights uncertainty over whether energy pass-through and AI-driven cost increases will push the print higher or if base effects and goods deflation will cap it near the prior reading. Key catalysts include the October 14 release and any interim oil or trade developments influencing the final composition.
