**Geopolitical and regulatory barriers remain the dominant factor keeping trader consensus at 79.5% for "No" on Apple purchasing CXMT memory chips in 2026.** Apple explored sourcing advanced DRAM (including LPDDR5X) from the Chinese maker amid 2026 memory shortages and price spikes driven by AI demand, lobbying the Trump administration in June for assurances against Entity List placement given CXMT’s placement on the Pentagon’s 1260H military-linked list. Those efforts stalled, with reports in August indicating CXMT declined discounted terms Apple sought while its capacity stayed largely committed through 2027 at high utilization. CXMT’s September 20 announcement of mass-produced fifth-generation (G5) DRAM with improved density has not altered the outlook, as political risks, reputational concerns from U.S. lawmakers, and Apple’s reliance on Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron continue to outweigh diversification incentives for the remainder of the year. Key near-term catalysts include any new Commerce Department actions or confirmed supplier-list updates.
