**Early in the 2027 Oscars cycle, trader sentiment for Best Documentary Feature reflects a wide-open field with no dominant frontrunner.** Festival premieres, critical acclaim, and distribution deals have elevated Once Upon a Time in Harlem and American Doctor as the clearest early standouts, yet their modest implied probabilities underscore the lengthy timeline to nominations in January 2027. Harlem benefits from rapturous reviews for its 1972 footage of Harlem Renaissance figures, Neon acquisition, and recent prizes including the Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns award ahead of its October theatrical release. American Doctor has drawn strong audience and critical response for its on-the-ground account of U.S. physicians treating children in Gaza, highlighted by festival awards and a Watermelon Pictures release. Other contenders such as Nuisance Bear, One in a Million, and Musk remain in play through Sundance momentum and director pedigree, but the broad clustering around “Other” signals that fall festival results, guild attention, and late-year releases will likely determine which films consolidate support among documentary branch voters.
