Recent polls ahead of the September 20 Berlin state election showed the CDU at roughly 20 percent, down sharply from its 28 percent result in 2023, placing it in a tight race with the Left Party and behind earlier expectations. Trader consensus around 35-39 seats reflects lingering assessments from periods when the CDU held a polling edge, combined with the five-percent threshold dynamics and potential for modest overperformance on election day. Key recent factors include historically low satisfaction with the incumbent CDU-SPD senate, the Left's surge on housing issues, AfD gains drawing from conservative voters, and national headwinds for Chancellor Merz's party after setbacks elsewhere. With final results pending, the 30-34 range remains a close alternative if turnout or late swings favor the CDU.
