The 2026 French Senate election on September 27 will renew 178 seats through indirect voting by grand electors, with the SER group (currently holding around 65 seats, 31 of which are contested) seeking to defend its position as the chamber’s second-largest bloc. Traders price the highest probability on outcomes of 59-64 seats, reflecting expectations of modest net losses or stability amid competition from the Union Centriste and potential left-wing alliance dynamics with ecologists. Recent municipal results have bolstered local implantation for some socialist candidates, yet broader fragmentation on the left and the prospect of Rassemblement National gains elsewhere shape the outlook. Resolution hinges on post-election group declarations by mid-October, with limited scope for major swings absent significant alliance shifts in key departments.
