Cho Jung-tai has served as Taiwan's premier since May 2024 under President Lai Ching-te amid divided government, with the opposition-controlled Legislative Yuan passing bills that the Cabinet has blocked via countersignature authority since late 2025. This tactic, used on multiple measures and defended by Cho in September 2026, has sparked constitutional debate and impeachment proposals but no successful no-confidence vote, which requires legislative majority support and would force resignation. The president holds unilateral appointment and dismissal power over the premier, reducing immediate removal risk absent major scandals, health events, or party shifts. Recent developments include policy focus on defense spending, minimum wage increases, and routine cabinet functions, with no verified signals of departure as of mid-September 2026. Traders weigh these institutional barriers and stable DPP dynamics against potential future legislative pressure or cabinet reshuffles before year-end.
