Recent polling averages place National and Labour within a few points of each other in the party vote, with both major parties hovering near 29-30 percent amid strong showings from the Greens, NZ First, ACT, and the Opportunities Party. This narrow gap between the two largest parties under New Zealand’s mixed-member proportional system has produced closely matched implied probabilities for second place. Recent policy launches on housing, competition, conservation, and immigration, alongside stable leadership for both Christopher Luxon and Chris Hipkins, have reinforced the contest’s competitiveness without creating sustained separation. The final weeks of campaigning, including advance voting and any late shifts in minor-party support, remain the primary variables that could widen or close the margin before the November 7 election.
