Harshan Ramadass and Kyle Hamilton, both sitting Fernie councillors with established records on local issues, lead trader positioning in the October 17, 2026 municipal election as the main declared contenders following incumbent mayor Nic Milligan’s decision not to seek re-election. Ramadass has highlighted infrastructure upgrades, permitting improvements, and fiscal sustainability, while Hamilton has stressed long-term planning, diversified housing, and advocacy for provincial or federal funding to ease property tax pressures amid aging sewer, wastewater, and road systems. With nominations closing September 11 and the formal campaign period beginning September 19, limited public polling and the potential for additional candidates keep the race competitive, as traders weigh the candidates’ overlapping priorities and shared council experience against their differing emphases on decisive action versus extended vision.
