The race for New Westminster mayor on October 17 remains tightly contested between incumbent Patrick Johnstone of Community First New West and challenger Daniel Fontaine of New West Progressives. Recent candidate debates and council proceedings have highlighted divisions over property tax increases, housing development, homelessness supports including a proposed tiny home village, and city hall responsiveness. Johnstone emphasizes continuity on affordability and social policies, while Fontaine points to fiscal pressures and calls for change. Trader consensus reflected in current pricing shows limited separation between the two, consistent with the absence of recent polls and the localized nature of municipal voting patterns. Upcoming nomination deadlines and any late campaign developments could shift positioning before election day.
