**Jimmy Lai’s February 2026 sentencing to 20 years in prison on national security charges for conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and publish seditious material has anchored trader expectations for near-term release at very low levels.** The 78-year-old British citizen, held since 2020, received the harshest penalty yet under Hong Kong’s national security law, with judges citing his role as the “mastermind” and lack of remorse. An earlier fraud conviction was overturned on appeal, but it does not alter the dominant sentence, and Lai has chosen not to appeal the national security outcome. Diplomatic pressure from the US, UK, and others for humanitarian parole on health grounds has continued without shifting Beijing or Hong Kong authorities, who treat the matter as an internal judicial affair. No scheduled legal or political events before late 2026 appear positioned to trigger early release, leaving the market’s implied probability reflecting the high structural barriers under current policy.

If Lai is released but remains under house arrest, the market will still resolve to "Yes".
If Lai is released on parole, bond, or any other condition that results in them leaving state custody, the market will resolve to "Yes".
Transporting Lai to another location of custody (e.g., a different prison, court, or hospital within the correctional system) will not suffice to resolve this market to "Yes". Extradition of Lai to another country where he remains in custody will also not count.
Temporary outings from prison for purposes such as testifying in court, while still under the custody of correctional authorities, will not count as a release.
The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from relevant government authorities or corrections departments; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
