Redistricting after the 2024 cycle shifted Texas’s 35th District to a Republican-leaning configuration covering parts of San Antonio and surrounding counties in Bexar, Guadalupe, Wilson, and Karnes, with a Trump margin of roughly 10 points under the new lines. Both nominees emerged from May 2026 runoffs: Democrat Johnny Garcia, a Bexar County sheriff’s deputy backed by party leaders and the DCCC after defeating a controversial rival, and Republican Carlos De La Cruz, an Air Force veteran and brother of Rep. Monica De La Cruz, who secured the nomination with President Trump’s endorsement over a state representative favored by Gov. Abbott. Recent polling shows a tight contest, and comparable fundraising has kept the race competitive despite the district’s baseline tilt, with traders assigning Garcia a narrow edge as the November 3 general election approaches.
