Proposition 5, a legislatively referred constitutional amendment on the November 3, 2026 ballot, would eliminate the simultaneous successor election in state officer recalls, leaving vacancies to be filled under existing constitutional and statutory rules while allowing the recalled official to run in any subsequent special election. Trader sentiment remains closely divided near 50 percent because the measure stems from post-2021 recall experiences yet lacks extensive public polling or dominant endorsements. Supporters highlight simplified ballots, reduced costs, and higher legitimacy for replacements, while opponents argue it diminishes direct voter input on successors and could shield incumbents. Upcoming campaign spending disclosures, endorsements from legislative leaders or advocacy groups, and early voter surveys could shift the narrow balance before election day.
