Four candidates compete in the September 13, 2026, Göttingen mayoral election after incumbent Petra Broistedt declined to run again. Onyeka Oshionwu (Greens, backed by Volt) holds a modest trader edge over Florian Dinger (SPD), with Ehsan Kangarani (CDU, FDP-supported) and Thomas Goes (Left) trailing. The fragmented field and university-city demographics keep probabilities close, as no candidate is expected to secure an outright majority and trigger a September 27 runoff. Recent candidate forums have highlighted city finances, housing costs, climate policy, and participation, with no major late shifts reported. Voter turnout among younger and progressive blocs could determine first-round separation in this open contest.
