The extreme rarity of magnitude 9.0+ earthquakes drives the 95% market-implied probability of none occurring before 2027, with only five confirmed events worldwide since 1900 and recurrence intervals typically spanning decades to centuries on major subduction zones. USGS data and global catalogs confirm no such quake since the 2011 Tohoku event, while 2025–2026 activity has remained below 8.8, consistent with the long-term average of roughly 1–3 events per century. Current seismic monitoring shows no anomalous strain accumulation or foreshock patterns that would signal an imminent full-margin rupture. A realistic shift could occur only through an unexpected megathrust failure on a high-strain segment such as Cascadia or Nankai within the remaining months, though historical base rates and the absence of precursors make this highly improbable before year-end.

The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/browse/significant.php#sigdef).
If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until January 31, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.
After a qualifying earthquake is registered, this market will remain open for 24 hours to account for any revisions to its recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data.
