Sweden's government on September 16, 2026, summoned Iran's ambassador and directed an embassy official to depart, citing activities incompatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and long-running security threats targeting regime opponents as well as Jewish and Israeli interests through criminal networks. This follows the U.S. expulsion of Iran's UN deputy ambassador and family members in late 2025. Such measures reflect recurring diplomatic friction driven by allegations of extraterritorial operations, with Sweden noting prior similar actions over two decades. Traders monitor these bilateral disputes for patterns that could signal the next expulsion, alongside scheduled diplomatic or security reviews that might accelerate or deter further steps.

For the purposes of this market, “expel” refers to a formal action by a country requiring the Iranian Ambassador currently stationed there as of market creation to leave the country, including a declaration of persona non grata. Revocation of the Ambassador’s visa or denial of entry to that country will not alone suffice.
An announcement of a qualifying expulsion will suffice for a “Yes” resolution, regardless of whether the Ambassador actually leaves the country.
The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the relevant country’s government; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
