The race between incumbent Ken Sim and Green Party councillor Pete Fry remains closely contested, with recent withdrawals by COPE and OneCity candidates consolidating progressive support behind Fry while multiple centre and right-leaning contenders continue to fragment opposition votes. Sim’s incumbency provides a base among homeowners, yet public polling through early August showed his job approval underwater and a large undecided pool exceeding 25 percent. Fry has gained ground as the primary alternative following the September consolidation moves, though persistent vote splitting and turnout dynamics among renters and younger voters keep separation elusive ahead of the October 17 election. Trader pricing reflects these factors, with no candidate yet establishing a decisive edge in a fragmented field.
