Mayes Middleton holds the leading position in the 2026 Texas attorney general race as the Republican nominee following his May runoff victory over Chip Roy, while Democrat Nathan Johnson secured his party's nomination by defeating Joe Jaworski. The open seat after Ken Paxton's Senate bid has drawn attention to the November 3 general election matchup between the two state senators. Recent early September polling shows Middleton ahead by roughly five points amid a sizable undecided share, narrower than historical Republican margins in statewide contests and reflecting Johnson's cross-aisle record and focus on consumer protection. Traders' consensus prices align with the state's partisan baseline and Middleton's primary spending advantage, though the contest remains more competitive than typical given turnout dynamics and voter familiarity gaps.
