Genta Koja leads trader pricing in the Okinawa gubernatorial race ahead of the September 13 vote, reflecting broad backing from Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party and allied groups for the former Naha vice mayor, alongside voter emphasis on economic growth, employment, and price measures over base relocation. Incumbent Denny Tamaki, seeking a third term with support from opposition parties, faces headwinds from a splintered “All Okinawa” coalition and polls showing roughly even support with high undecided shares. Minor candidates remain long shots given the effective two-way contest. Recent campaign developments, including final-week focus on central-government ties and pocketbook priorities, have sustained Koja’s edge in skin-in-the-game consensus while leaving room for last-minute shifts before ballots close.
