Yu Shu-chen, the Kuomintang nominee and incumbent Ji’an Township head, leads the November 28, 2026 Hualien County magistrate race with strong institutional backing in a traditionally pan-blue county. The KMT selected her in March 2026 after she prevailed in the party’s internal poll, positioning her as the successor to the Fu Kun-chi political network. Independent challengers Chang Chun, the county council speaker, and Wei Chia-hsien, a former city mayor and councilor—both ex-KMT figures—split pro-KMT support and appeal to overlapping factions, while the absence of a Democratic Progressive Party nominee leaves roughly one-quarter of the electorate potentially decisive. Recent polls, including Storm Media surveys, show Yu ahead at around 30 percent amid high undecided shares. Late-August investigations into alleged vote-buying have not materially altered positioning, reinforcing trader consensus around the official nominee’s organizational edge ahead of the vote.
