The Trump administration’s February 2026 congressional notification outlining a phased approach to resuming operations, combined with the August 2026 removal of Syria from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism, has shaped trader views on reopening timelines. Special Envoy Tom Barrack’s earlier flag-raising at the compound and ongoing diplomatic contacts with the transitional government under Ahmed al-Sharaa further signal momentum. Parallel European moves, including Denmark’s late-August 2026 embassy reopening, underscore the broader normalization trend following sanctions relief and refugee returns. Remaining procedural steps, security assessments, and any congressional funding timelines could still influence the final date of full U.S. operations in Damascus.
