This market will resolve to "Yes" if the World Health Organization explicitly characterizes Hantavirus, Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS), or a Hantavirus-related outbreak as a "pandemic" in an official public communication between market creation and December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No". An explicit characterization includes official WHO statements, reports, press briefings, or publications that clearly describe the outbreak as a "pandemic." A Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) alone will not qualify unless it is also described as a pandemic. The primary resolution source for this market will be official WHO communications. A consensus of credible reporting may also be used. The contained April 2026 Andes virus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, which produced roughly 13 cases and three deaths through limited person-to-person spread, remains the key driver behind the 97% market-implied probability against a 2026 hantavirus pandemic. Official CDC and WHO monitoring of hundreds of contacts, including 42-day quarantines, ended in June with no sustained transmission or U.S. cases detected. Andes virus, the only hantavirus with documented human-to-human transmission, still requires prolonged close contact and lacks the respiratory efficiency of pandemic pathogens like influenza or SARS-CoV-2. Broader 2025–2026 Argentine case counts stay consistent with seasonal rodent-borne patterns, without evidence of wider adaptation or exponential growth. Ongoing surveillance through public health agencies continues to show low global risk.
