Masoud Pezeshkian remains Iran's president in September 2026, actively participating in diplomacy at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit and preparing for the BRICS gathering while managing post-conflict relations with the United States. A June memorandum of understanding ended direct hostilities with Washington and Israel, yet implementation talks have stalled amid renewed sanctions and threats over the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier resignation rumors tied to tensions with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei were repeatedly denied by Pezeshkian, who continues to coordinate with the heads of the three branches of government. Economic pressures, including fuel price adjustments and energy shortages, have prompted calls for national unity without triggering leadership changes. Upcoming scheduled events such as bilateral meetings and policy deadlines on sanctions relief represent the main near-term variables that could influence continuity.
