Northeast winds and lingering cloud cover from a cool air mass are the main drivers keeping overnight lows in Chicago near the historical 56°F average for September 22. Official forecasts from NWS and model guidance converge on a low of 57°F under partly to mostly cloudy skies, with minimal radiative cooling overnight. This setup favors the tightly bunched 54–59°F outcomes that dominate trader positioning, as small shifts in wind speed or cloud thickness could easily tip the minimum into adjacent bins. Recent cooler-than-normal conditions have reinforced the pattern, though any clearing trend late in the period could allow modest warming toward the upper end of the range.
