Massive hyperscaler capital expenditures exceeding $1 trillion through 2026, paired with narrowing free cash flow and rising debt issuance, have fueled trader focus on whether returns will justify the spending amid BIS warnings of potential investment bust similar to prior tech manias. Chinese models matching U.S. capabilities at lower prices, alongside usage data showing overseas AI surpassing domestic in some metrics, add competitive pressure. Recent rapid frontier releases—including OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra, Anthropic Claude updates, and Google Gemini iterations—have highlighted both capability gains and emerging model fatigue among enterprises, while internal safety debates and researcher exits underscore timeline risks. Macquarie analysts describe the cycle as likely deflating through sequential “rolling bubbles” rather than a single event.
