OpenAI’s path to an IPO has shifted decisively following CEO Sam Altman’s September 12 confirmation that a 2026 listing is off the table, with the company prioritizing AI safety, alignment, and industry-government coordination over near-term access to public capital. The firm confidentially filed its S-1 in June targeting up to a $1 trillion valuation, above its March 2026 private mark of $852 billion after a $122 billion round, yet recent market precedents like SpaceX’s post-IPO volatility have reinforced caution. With Anthropic advancing toward a potential late-2026 debut, OpenAI’s eventual closing market cap will hinge on 2027 revenue trajectory—currently on a high-growth run rate amid substantial losses—macro risk appetite, and any step-change model launches that could support or pressure the trillion-dollar threshold once trading begins.

In the event of an interruption in the course of the normal trading session on OpenAI's first day of trading (e.g., a circuit breaker or half-day), the market will resolve according to the official closing price of the abbreviated session. If no such official closing price is published, the market will resolve according to the next trading day on which an official closing price is published, treating that as the first day of trading.
