Multiple companies have advanced orbital AI compute plans amid terrestrial power constraints, with SpaceX filing for up to one million satellites targeting initial deployments as early as 2028 and Blue Origin pursuing a 51,600-satellite constellation. Starcloud demonstrated single-GPU operation by training a small LLM in orbit in late 2025, while Sophia Space secured $300 million in financing for a planned 10-satellite edge-compute array using Nvidia processors. However, qualifying launches require at least 100 data-center-grade accelerators, and current prototypes remain far smaller. Key hurdles include launch costs needing to fall below $500 per kilogram, radiation hardening, heat dissipation via radiators, and limited downlink capacity. Upcoming catalysts include Google-Planet prototype satellites slated for early 2027 and Orbital-1 platform development targeted for late 2027.

“Orbital data center” refers to any spacecraft, satellite, or equivalent technology carrying computing infrastructure that is launched into Earth’s orbit for the purpose of providing data-center, cloud-computing, or artificial intelligence computing services and which includes at least 100 data-center-grade AI accelerators, GPUs, TPUs, or substantially equivalent compute processors, (e.g. NVIDIA H100 GPUs, Google TPUs, or equivalent or successor chips).
“Successfully launched” refers to any launch which successfully places a qualifying orbital data center into Earth’s orbit.
