Diplomatic protocol and longstanding precedent drive the near-certain trader consensus against a kiss at the upcoming Trump-Xi summit. US and Chinese leaders have consistently used formal handshakes during state visits and bilateral meetings, including the May 2026 Beijing summit and prior encounters, with no recorded instances of lip contact or equivalent gestures in decades of engagement. Both leaders' public styles emphasize ceremonial pageantry and mutual respect statements rather than personal familiarity. The scheduled September 24, 2026, state visit to Washington follows this pattern, focusing on trade, Taiwan, and strategic stability amid ongoing competition. While late surprises such as an unprecedented cultural exchange or private moment could theoretically occur, historical patterns and verified footage requirements for resolution make any deviation from standard greetings highly improbable under current conditions.
