Texas Republican dominance in statewide contests, combined with Mayes Middleton’s victory in a competitive GOP primary runoff, drives the elevated trader consensus around his prospects in the November 3, 2026, attorney general election. The open seat stems from incumbent Ken Paxton’s decision to pursue a U.S. Senate nomination. Middleton, a state senator who branded himself as aligned with the Trump administration and outspent rivals, faces Democratic state Sen. Nathan Johnson, who won his party’s runoff by emphasizing a less partisan focus for the office. Recent polling shows a narrower margin than typical for Texas executive races, with undecided voters remaining a factor weeks before Election Day, though historical patterns and handicapper assessments continue to favor the Republican nominee.
