The Bank of Japan's September 18 rate hike to 1.25%—its highest since 1995—combined with underlying CPI inflation near the 2% target and fiscal expansion under Prime Minister Takaichi, anchors trader expectations for further normalization. The 10-year JGB yield, currently near 2.98% after briefly touching 3.04% earlier in September, has climbed more than 130 basis points over the past year amid yen weakness, energy price pressures, and reduced monetary accommodation. Market-implied odds of 67.3% for a close above 3.0% by December 31 reflect this path, tempered by two dissenting board members signaling a potentially measured pace ahead. Key near-term catalysts include October inflation data and any additional policy signals before year-end.
