California Proposition 5, a legislatively referred constitutional amendment on the November 3, 2026 ballot, would remove the simultaneous successor question from state officer recall elections, leaving vacancies to be filled later under existing succession, appointment, or special election rules. Trader consensus slightly favoring rejection reflects opposition from groups such as Reform California, which argue the change reduces direct voter input on replacements and could shield incumbents, balanced against support from organizations including the League of Women Voters that highlight potential cost savings and streamlined procedures. With limited polling and few major endorsements to date, the outcome remains closely contested, hinging on future campaign spending, additional endorsements, and any late developments in ongoing local recall efforts that could shift attention to the statewide measure.
