The federal criminal case against the Southern Poverty Law Center, indicted in April 2026 on 11 counts including wire fraud, false statements to a bank, and conspiracy to commit money laundering over its informant payments to extremist groups, remains in pretrial proceedings. A federal judge in the Middle District of Alabama denied the organization's August motion to dismiss on vindictive prosecution grounds, allowing the case to advance under superseding indictments that added limited details and named a former employee. With no trial date set and complex fraud prosecutions typically requiring extended discovery, motions practice, and scheduling, resolution by the end of 2026 appears unlikely, supporting trader consensus around an 89.5% probability that no guilty finding occurs this year.
