The U.S. Embassy in Damascus has remained closed since 2012 amid the Syrian civil war, with diplomatic functions handled through protecting powers and limited engagement. Following the December 2024 ouster of Bashar al-Assad, the Trump administration advanced normalization through sanctions relief, removal of Syria from the state sponsors of terrorism list in August 2026, and appointment of Tom Barrack as special envoy. Steps include raising the U.S. flag at the ambassador’s residence in 2025, congressional notification for phased reopening operations in February 2026, and coordination with the transitional government under Ahmed al-Sharaa. Parallel reopenings by Denmark and other European states in 2026, plus accreditation of multiple ambassadors in Damascus, reflect accelerating bilateral ties. Key upcoming factors include further security assessments, congressional funding for diplomatic infrastructure, and any additional executive actions that could enable full resumption of embassy operations.
